The Story

Mindful started from a personal frustration. Every meditation app I tried was bloated with features I didn't need — social sharing, gamification, subscription upsells. I just wanted a timer and a place to write my thoughts.

So I built one.

The Beginning

The initial version was embarrassingly simple: a countdown timer and a text input. But that simplicity became the foundation of everything that followed. Users told me they loved that Mindful didn't try to do too much.

The Technical Challenge

The hardest problem wasn't the UI — it was making the timer work reliably in the background. Mobile operating systems aggressively kill background processes to save battery. I had to implement platform-specific solutions:

  • On iOS, I used background fetch combined with local notifications
  • On Android, I leveraged foreground services with careful battery optimization

Even now, I'm constantly testing on new OS versions to ensure the timer doesn't silently fail.

Design Philosophy

Every design decision in Mindful answers one question: "Does this support mindfulness or distract from it?"

  • No bright colors that stimulate rather than calm
  • No achievement badges that turn meditation into a competition
  • No statistics that make users obsess over metrics instead of presence

What I Learned

Building Mindful taught me that constraints breed creativity. With a deliberately narrow feature set, every addition had to prove itself essential. Most ideas got rejected — and that was okay.

The app is now used by over 10,000 people daily. But the metric I care about most is the messages from users saying it helped them build a meditation practice. That's the point.

What's Next

I'm exploring adding gentle audio support — nature sounds and binaural beats. The challenge is doing it in a way that doesn't complicate the current simplicity. If I can't figure out how to add it elegantly, I won't add it at all.

That's the Mindful way.
